More than ninety minutes

One of Mallorca’s sporting symbols is RCD Mallorca. The club plays in Palma at Son Moix, and going there became part of my island life not only because of football, but because of everything that happened around the match.

When leading clubs such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Sevilla or Atlético de Madrid visited, the anticipation began well before kick-off. The music, conversations and relaxed sporting atmosphere turned the evening into a social occasion.

It was an easy place to meet people. Residents, newcomers and visitors shared the same subject and the same emotion without needing an introduction. Repeated matches created familiar faces; familiar faces became conversations; some conversations became friendships.

A route into island life

For someone who arrived from elsewhere, those rituals mattered. Integration is not achieved only through paperwork or language certificates. It also happens by returning to the same place, learning the references everyone understands and participating in a collective joy or disappointment.

Son Moix gave the week a social rhythm and offered a view of Mallorca as a living community rather than a destination. Supporting the island’s team helped me feel that Mallorca was no longer simply where I lived and worked. It was somewhere I belonged.

That is why I recommend the experience even to people who are not devoted football supporters. Go for the atmosphere, the conversations and the chance to understand another part of the island’s identity.
