One of Mallorca’s most cosmopolitan events is the Palma Marathon, held around Parc de la Mar below the cathedral. Runners arrive from around the world: professionals, enthusiasts and people carrying personal promises connected with illness, recovery or a change in life.

My photograph and memory belong to an earlier edition, but the event itself is not out of date. The Palma Marathon continues every year; its official 2026 edition is scheduled for Sunday 18 October, with marathon, half-marathon and 10-kilometre races starting at Parc de la Mar.

I went to watch and found much more than a race. The atmosphere was lively and generous. People exchanged experiences, absorbed the positive energy and met strangers they would probably never encounter in ordinary life.

Not everyone needs to run the full marathon. Shorter distances allow more people to participate, and simply coming to watch places you inside a city temporarily organised around effort and encouragement rather than traffic and routine.

The practical dates, starting times, registration and race-pack collection change each year, so they must be confirmed on the organiser’s current website. What does not change is the invitation: run if you want, or come to support the runners and share the morning.

For me, events like this show another side of island life. Mallorca is not only landscape. It is also the moments when people from many countries occupy the same streets, encourage one another and, for a few hours, feel part of the same place.
