The spiritual heart of Mallorca

In Escorca, within the Serra de Tramuntana, stands the Monastery of Lluc. Its protected position keeps it away from the island’s most obvious tourist routes, yet it is the spiritual heart of Mallorca.

The approach is by winding mountain roads from the Sóller or Inca sides. Around the monastery are accommodation and restaurants, making it possible to spend quiet time there completely removed from daily noise.

Lluc is essential for anyone who wants to understand Mallorca beyond the coast. I also recommend the nearby botanical garden. The combination of sanctuary, stone, forest and mountain air creates an opportunity for tranquillity, reflection and reconnection with nature.

Christmas night and the Sibil·la

On Christmas Eve, Lluc becomes the setting for an extraordinary tradition also heard in churches across Mallorca: the Song of the Sibyl, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

To arrive at Lluc at night and take part in the celebration is to feel temporarily transported to another age. The liturgical drama announces the Last Judgement within the celebration of the birth of Christ.

During Midnight Mass, a young singer performs the chant a cappella, at times accompanied by the organ, and moves through the church with two children towards the choir. The simplicity of the voice against the architecture gives the moment its force.

The performance belongs to faith, but also to the island’s cultural memory. Even for someone approaching it from outside the tradition, it creates a profound connection with Mallorca’s history and with the generations who heard the same melody before us.
