The walk from S’Estanyol

Autumn is ideal for excursions in Mallorca and, if the day is warm, for a final swim in a cove. The defence tower of S’Estalella belonged to the old coastal system used to warn Mallorca of approaching raiders and invaders.

The tower stands on the coast of Llucmajor, near the small maritime village of S’Estanyol. From the parking area near the yacht club begins a relatively easy walk of around an hour and a half, with several possible stops—including a beautiful cove for sunbathing or swimming.

Along the route you pass unusual holiday homes built directly on the rocks. Their position and views create an almost magical setting, although they also remind you how closely private life and the public coastal landscape can meet on the island.

A window towards the sea

Farther on there is a lighthouse. Near the tower, an opening in the rock forms a kind of secret window through which the sea appears framed. It is a small discovery, but one of those details that turns a pleasant walk into a remembered place.

The excursion works alone, as a couple or in a group. I recommend carrying a swimsuit for the cove at the end and, afterwards, recovering your energy at one of my favourite informal places: the bar and restaurant of Club Nàutic S’Estanyol.
